10:00 AM Saturday, March 29

Tour Confederate Park and Unity Cemetery
Fort Mill, SC

We will meet at the Bandstand in Confederate Park on Main Street. As we walk around Confederate Park we will hear about the monuments dedicated to the Catawbas, slaves, soldiers, and women “who sacrificed so much from 1861-1865.” We will move on to Unity Cemetery on Tom Hall St. to visit the graves of members of the Springs Family as well as the World War I plot that contains graves of several Medal of Honor recipients. We will end our visit in Fort Mill at the Fort Mill History Museum, 310 N. White Street.

10:00 AM Wednesday, April 2

Trip to the S.C. Department of Archives and History
8301 Parklane Rd. in Columbia

We will have a tour of the Research Room and learn what materials are available and how to use them. We will also the visit the stacks to see several of the more important documents housed in the Archives and then visit the Exhibit Hall. We will also meet Dr. Eric Emerson, Director of the S.C. Department of Archives and History, who will make a brief presentation about the importance and work of the Archives.

Participants can carpool or meet in Columbia. Those who wish can go to lunch together after the program. Specific details will be available at the March meeting.

Visit Flint Hill Baptist Church
Fort Mill, SC

We will participate in the annual meeting to honor veterans from all wars from the Revolution through the mid 20th century.

After the commemorative program we will have the Annual Business Meeting of the YCG&HS. A social time will follow the meeting.

9:00 AM Saturday, July 26

Visit Winthrop University
Rock Hill, SC

Dr. Eddie Lee will talk about the history of Winthrop University and then lead a walking tour of historic sites on the Winthrop campus. Gathering point to be announced later.

10:00 AM on a Saturday in September [date to be set next July]

Visit Kings Mountain National Military Park
York County, SC

We will hear a presentation by a Park Ranger on the role of local militias in the Battle of Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780. We will also hear about the impact of the Patriot victory on the outcome of the American Revolution. Those who wish can walk around the battlefield after the presentation.

10:00 AM Saturday, November 8

Visit the York County Historical Center Archives at the McCelvey Center
212 E. Jefferson Street, York, SC

We will gather in the Jane Spratt Room at the McCelvey Center. Archivist Nancy Sambets will tell us about the kinds of materials that are available in the Archives and explain how to get started on basic genealogical research. If possible, we will visit the expanded Archives in the building beside McCelvery.
